This article examines the phenomenon of the “interiority turn” among China's Gen Z, referring to a generational shift in which the core of meaning-making moves away from external social roles and success narratives toward emotional experience and psychological self-coherence. It argues that this turn is driven by pressures embedded in traditional family scripts, the narrowing of pathways to success, and the catalytic role of digital platforms. These conditions give rise to a form of “estranged subjectivity,” through which Gen Z responds to external demands, alongside the construction of a “therapeutic self” centered on emotional healing. By setting boundaries, distancing themselves from traditional anchors, and seeking resonance in digital communities, Gen Z attempts to situate the self within an uncertain environment, yet also faces deeper dilemmas such as the suspension of meaning anchors. Through a comparative analysis with earlier generations, the article reveals the causes, characteristics, and cultural and ethical implications of this generational transformation.
